Our Mission

Women of Essence is committed to increasing local and national attention on the devastating impact of breast cancer on the African-American community

The primary objective of this organization is to provide a strong support base and an emotional safe haven for breast cancer survivors to express their fears, frustrations, and concerns. We provide updates breast cancer educational information, to teach each member and non-member how to take responsibility for their own health, so that they can reclaim a sense of control in their lives.

Women of Essence Breast Cancer Support Group was founded in 1995, by Gloria Harmon who is an eight-year breast cancer survivor.

For several years Women of Essence has been collaborating with AT&T Broadband on different community outreach projects. Last year, we produced a PSA called I’m a Survivor.  This PSA ran on our local cable channel as well as the local television affiliated in Los Angeles area.

In 2001, a documentary was produced call “ Faces of Survival.  The video featured a WOE breast cancer support group meeting. This documentary was produced to help women through the struggles of breast cancer survivorship.  Because of these to projects WOE have reached out to 10,000.00 women.
